BROWNSWORD HALL, POUNDBURY

CHANGE OF TIMES AT BROWNSWORD HALL!

 From January 2025, we have secured an extra half hour at the hall. Classes will now finish at 4.30pm which will make for a more relaxed session. Doors open at 1.30 so that sessions can start promptly at 1.45pm as usual, but now end at 4.30 pm.  This includes setting-up and clearing-away time.

ABSTRACTION FROM STILL LIFE - untutored

Take a look at Ben Nicholson's painting "still life with mugs"  to get an idea about our theme for today, still life abstraction using a limited palette. Bring some objects for a still life arrangement to paint/draw using negative and positive shapes. BMOYC.

Maureen will be leading a collage workshop. An afternoon of transposing paintings/drawings into collage.

Seascapes workshop with Richard Corbett

Richard will lead the class with an introduction about his work and then give a short demo that introduces his use of colour and texture. Class members can then work on their own piece based on Richard's demo. Please see main page for what to bring!

Watercolours with Duncan Park

Duncan will lead a session on watercolours and recommends the following:

Good quality paper and paints -  (Basic palette.. ultramarine, cobalt blue, windsor blue-green shade, alizarin crimson permanent, windsor red, burnt sienna, raw sienna and cadmium yellow); masking tape; board; bulldog clips; brushes (squirrel mop/hake, number 10 rigger brush); kitchen roll; spray bottle; pencil; putty rubber; sketch pad.

Parking at top o town carpark DT1 1XT , including loos. Coffee kiosk in the park. Flowers, bandstand, fountain, trees!

Meet at bandstand at 10am, stay as long as you want.


Thursday 19th June   Cattistock

A classic English village, situated just 10 miles north of Dorchester and nestling in the Dorset hills at the heart of Hardy country. The beautiful church, which features in ‘Britain’s 1,000 Best Churches’, boasts a William Morris window. Paint distant views, cottages and church. Coffee/ tea and biscuits available for a donation of £3 please. If you want sandwiches, please order them by emailing nicolabutler48@gmail.com or alternatively there is food available at the shop or pub.

Meet at at 10am at the church DT2 0JG (where there are also loos!)

Thursday 3rd July –  Bowleaze Coveway DT3 6PN

Car parks are at Bowleaze Cove and Overcombe Beach or on-street along the Coveway itself. Views shown are from the green space on the hill between the two locations.

Lunches, teas and loos can be found at The Lookout Café. If you prefer the beach there are cafes, shops and loos at both Overcombe (DT3 6SX) and Bowleaze Cove.

Meet at the Lookout café at 10am, stay as long as you wish!

Thursday 17th July - Moreton

Moreton is a small village near the county town of Dorchester. The villages highlights include St. Nicholas Church and its beautiful glass windows engraved by the late Sir Laurence Whistler.

The famous writer and adventurer T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) lived nearby at Clouds Hill in Bovington and his last resting place is in Moreton cemetery.

Admission to formal garden area £3 suggested donation. Under 18s FREE. Parking is free, and the whole site is dog friendly.

The on-site Dovecote Café is open 9am – 4pm every day, has seating available inside and outside (including benches in the gardens).

Meet at the café at 10am. 

Thursday 7th August   Thorncombe woods / Hardy’s cottage

This magical pocket of mixed woodland and heath is listed on the Ancient Woodland Inventory.

The 26 hectare mixed woodland and heath site is home to a great diversity of trees including mature Oaks, Sweet Chestnut and Beech. The woodland gives way to Black Heath, an area of heath in restoration with its own herd of Dartmoor ponies. Rushy Pond, famous from Thomas Hardy works.

There is a paid carpark and café at the entrance. Meet at the carpark at 10am.

A beautiful Dorset village, with pond and thatched cottages.
